Description:
Consolidation of Biotechnology capability and associated services, involving 20 different facility projects and 20 infrastructure projects.
Purpose
of project:
Effectively to 'ringfence' this aspect of the company's operations within a quarter of the 107-acre site allowing the remainder to be sold for redevelopment.
Time-scale:
18 months from January 1997.
Attributes:
A highly complex project that was constantly challenged by the continually changing requirements of the sell-off programme.
Successes:
Business needs were met on time and to budget. The facilities provided met the users' needs at the end of the project - not just at the outset. Work started seven months earlier than it would have done using traditional methods, with a further six months reduction on the time to completion . This saved £2.25m on time alone. Lean Design and Right First Time construction methods resulted in a 550 man months reduction in resources. This equated to a 20% saving in manpower worth £1.5 million. A further £750K being saved by minimising reworking. |
